Top Reasons to Travel to the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is well known for its blue beaches, perfect weather, and fun times.  There are tons of all-inclusive resorts for every level of budget, endless pools, regular activities, and access to some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see.

Here are some of the top reasons you should travel to the Dominican Republic for your next getaway:

Tons of Beaches

Of course, coming to an island, there will be beaches.  But The Dominican Republic has almost 1,000 miles of them, and plenty of them have soft, cool white sand welcoming you to take it all in.

If you’re looking for something a little more active, you can go surfing, snorkeling, or windsurfing.  Or you can just relax with a beachside cocktail on one of the island’s lovely stretches of sand.

Resorts

Many people want to go to the islands of the Caribbean Sea to enjoy all-inclusive resorts, where once you check in, everything is taken care of for you.  There are many resort options for you in the Dominican Republic.  You can choose an all-inclusive luxury experience or stay at a smaller, less expensive option.  Many resorts can host your wedding or other celebration.  And most have facilities like spas, golf courses, and fine dining options.

Convenience

It only takes a short flight to get to The Dominican Republic.  And because of its popularity, many airlines have options for direct flights from most major airports.  That means you won’t need to book connecting flights and worry about missed connections and getting stuck at the airport.

Nightlife

You’ll enjoy going out in the Dominican Republic, and it will be an experience you won’t soon forget.

The city boasts many places to relax, with pubs, dive bars, and exclusive nightclubs.

Many resorts in the Dominican Republic will have nightly entertainment, or you can head into the city of Santo Domingo and get a real taste of the local culture!

Water Activities:

The Dominican Republic is known for its nearly endless beaches, which make it the perfect place to experience all types of water adventures.  From shallow water snorkeling to parasailing to scuba diving, there are no limits to the amount of water adventure you can expect on your trip.

Dominican Food

Dominican food is much like Creole foods, filled with meats, rice, and beans.  You will find that many of the dishes take inspiration from African and Spanish cultures.  You can also find many mouth-watering seafood options since it is an island with access to the freshest fish!

Rum

The Dominican Republic is known for its rum; you can undoubtedly drink your fair share while on vacation here.  You can tour the famous Brugal Rum factory in Puerta Plata to learn how rum came to the island from Cuba and was perfected by 19th-century Dominicans.  And don’t forget if you stay at an all-inclusive resort, alcohol is included in your price.  That means- UNLIMITED Rum for you.

Hiking

A few hours west of Puerto Plata is the famous natural wonder, the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua.

Not only can you look at water rushing down rocks and cliffs, but you can also cool off in natural pools, swim through canyons, and dry off on a hike.  You can even slide down waterfalls while floating in the river.

Music Festivals

The Dominican Republic is somewhat of a paradise for music lovers.  Whether you need some traditional Dominican music at the Bachata Tour and Festival or are a fan of R&B and Solfest is more your style.  Whatever your musical desires, you can get your fill on vacation to the Dominican Republic.

5 Reasons Why Antigua Should Be at the Top of Your Travel Bucket List

5 Reasons Why Antigua Should Be at the Top of Your Travel Bucket List

When you think of the perfect Caribbean vacation, what comes to mind? Endless, pristine white sand beaches and a brilliant aquamarine sea? Friendly locals and a laid-back vibe where no one’s in a hurry to get anywhere? Delicious, flavorsome food with lots of spice? Lots of fun ways to get your blood pumping while exploring gorgeous natural surroundings?

Well, you’ve basically just described Antigua. This gem in the Caribbean boasts all these things and more, in abundance. One of the most beautiful places in the world, Antigua offers a staggering range of possibilities for your perfect island vacation. Read on for 5 reasons you need to move Antigua to the top of your travel bucket list.

    1. The food! – Caribbean food is known for having a kick, and the food in Antigua is sure to tickle your tastebuds and have you hungry for more. Snack on conch fritters, a popular local treat. And make sure to try the national dish, fungee and pepperpot – you know you want to try it for the name alone – which is a sort of stew with cornmeal patties.
And don’t forget about the seafood. Antigua is known for its fresh seafood, including lobster, shrimp, and fish. Grilled or fried, it doesn’t matter. Seafood is a must-experience staple of Antiguan cuisine. Paired with rice, vegetables, and other local ingredients, you’ll be in taste bud heaven!
    2. Outdoor adventures – There are so many activities to keep you fascinated and exhilarated in Antigua. Swimming with stingrays (don’t worry, it’s totally safe), Snorkeling with sea turtles. Cruising in a catamaran. Hiking, boat tours, kayaking, paddleboarding – take your pick or do it all!
    3. Pink Sand Beach – White sand beaches are great – and there are plenty to choose from in Antigua – if you crave something a bit extra, visit Pink Sand Beach. Take the Barbuda Express Ferry for the 90-minute ride to this incredible natural wonder. The pink hue of the sand is caused by the coral reefs off the coast.
    4. Explore history at Nelson’s Dockyard – This site was a British naval base in the 18th century which was restored in the 1950s. Now it’s a popular tourist destination, featuring a museum, historic forts, hiking trails, art galleries, cafes, and even 5-star accommodations.
    5. The vibes! – Everyone should get a chance to live on “island time.” Just living in the moment, enjoying life, not in a hurry to be anywhere. The locals are always friendly, helpful, and happy to share their favorite spots with you.

And if you’re looking for nightlife and festivities, Antigua has that too! If you’re lucky enough to visit during “Mas” (that’s their 2-week-long Carnival celebration), be ready for an experience you’ll never forget! This festival is full of parades, music, food, and fabulous costumes. Don’t be afraid to get involved!

Have we convinced you yet? Exquisite beaches (in unusual colors!), friendly locals, history and culture, food and festivals, adventures and relaxation – what more could you possibly want? With so much to offer, your only challenge will be finding time to do it all.

Introverts Love to Travel Too!

Introverts Love to Travel Too!

Introverts Love to Travel Too!

If you’re an introvert who dreams of traveling the world but aren’t sure you’ll be able to handle things like the crowds, socializing, and activities that come along with it, let me be the first and hopefully not last to tell you; that you absolutely can! Although traveling is about getting outside of your comfort zone, there are many ways that you can stay firmly within your limits even while you’re in a new place.

Here are five tips to help introverts get the most out of travel.

Say No to Roommates.

Although it may cost you more money, booking a room alone may be just what you need to unwind. After a long day of sightseeing and social interaction, being able to come back to your room and just be, might be what you need. And don’t forget your favorite book, journal, or playlist to help you unwind each day.

Schedule Down Time.

Suppose it’s your first time in a new and fabulous location.  You’ll probably face the temptation to cram your itinerary full of sightseeing and activities. Try to ignore this temptation. If you’re the type of person who needs alone time or relaxation time at home, you should plan to need that when traveling. So, see the sights, and when you’re done, head back to that big empty room you booked.

Book Guided Tours or Activities.

While you can easily explore on your own, booking a guided experience can give you the chance to meet people in a structured way. The guide will also take care of planning and navigating every detail, so you’ll be able to focus on the activity at hand and avoid draining your social battery.

If You’re Traveling in a Group, Schedule Solo Time to Explore at Your Own Pace.

If you’re traveling with a group, it’s good to schedule at least a few hours here and there to be alone and enjoy your destination at your own pace. You could do something simple like getting breakfast on your own or sitting at a cafe and journaling. It doesn’t need to be anything fancy but giving yourself the chance to indulge in your introversion will allow you to be more extroverted in other moments.

Extroverts Might Not Understand.

When you’re opting to skip an activity or social interaction, you might hear comments or questions like, “Did you come all this way to stay in your room?” or ” You’re missing everything!” The truth is, extroverts just don’t get it, and that’s ok. You have every right to vacation the way that’s right for you. Please do your best to ignore these comments and questions; they don’t usually come from a mean-spirited place.

Don’t Worry About the Things You Think you “Have” to Do – Do What You Want to Do!

There are always those attractions and sights that are so incredible it seems criminal to skip them during your trip. And while some of those attractions are worth it, constantly doing things because you think you have to check them off an imaginary list can be very draining. Instead, make sure you’re experiencing your vacation in a way that makes you happy.

Whether traveling alone or in a group, there are ways for an introvert to stay fresh and energetic and make sure they are accommodating their own needs on their trip. So, embrace your introversion and quirkiness and explore the world in your unique way.  If you’re ready to travel, don’t hesitate to send me a message.

Go Solo Safely. Twenty-Five Travel Tips for Female Travelers

Go Solo Safely. Twenty-Five Travel Tips for Female Travelers

Go Solo Safely

Twenty-Five Travel Tips for Female Travelers

Traveling solo is an amazing and liberating experience. But some people, especially women, may be hesitant to travel solo with concerns for their safety. Here are some tips to help you on your journey.

  1. Start slow. Your first solo trip doesn’t have to be an extravagant European vacation. Taking a road trip to a neighboring state counts too and gets you warmed up for bigger future trips.
  2. Avoid listening to music in headphones or earbuds while walking about in a city. It will make you less aware of your surroundings.
  3. RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH! Plan out your activities and accommodations ahead of time. Be sure to check out the reviews of each before booking!
  4. Do not flaunt valuable jewelry, purses, or accessories. They will make you a target for someone intending to rob an unsuspecting traveler.
  5. Enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program), a free service that alerts you of changing travel advisories, natural disasters, or family emergencies.
  6. Make eye contact with people and walk straight up, always addressing people with confidence and assertiveness.
  7. Pack light when traveling solo. If you have an unexpected injury, you’ll have difficulty lugging around a heavy suitcase, and you won’t have any backup to help you.
  8. Make yourself aware of the city or area and if they are having issues with scams or crimes.
  9. Avoid getting intoxicated while you are in a foreign and unknown place alone. A few drinks here and there are ok, but safety first!
  10. Stay off your phone. This will help you stay more aware of your surroundings, of course, and will help avoid getting lost.
  11. At night, while walking, try to stay close to a group or a family. Make eye contact with them so that they realize you are friendly. Stay close so that you are less of a target to someone that could be watching from a distance.
  12. Avoid traveling by public transportation such as trains, buses, or taxis at night. Uber is an international company and much safer because the app can track the driver and travel details. You can also share your ride information, including driver identity and vehicle details with any of your contacts.
  13. Take an escorted tour. You’ll have solo accommodations, but you’ll meet up with a tour guide and small group for all activities and some meals. Always keep the contact information of your accommodations on your person. Should you get lost during your travels, you will have the location information as a quick reference.
  14. Don’t skip on Travel Insurance. As a solo traveler, travel insurance is even more critical in case of injury, trip interruptions, or lost/stolen baggage.
  15. As a woman, there is an advantage to carrying cash or cards in your bra or in a money belt that fits under your clothes. It’s wise to carry most of your money and cards somewhere on or close to your body.
  16. Be willing to meet local women. Women tend to look out for other women. So as a solo traveler, it does not hurt to make friends with local women.
  17. Be careful with social media. Before you “do it for the gram,” consider not posting in real-time or tagging your location while you’re still there.
  18. Make sure your phone is fully charged when you leave your room. Bring an external power bank to be on the safe side.
  19. Don’t spend big in public. You never know who’s watching you pull out large amounts of cash or swiping for big purchases.
  20. You do not have to check with your family or friends every day but let them know the details of your accommodations and the activities you have planned. Schedule calls at specific times so that they are expecting to hear from you. Should anything go wrong, that is their initial indicator.
  21. While traveling internationally, make copies of your passport and take the documents with you. Always leave your official passport behind at your accommodations, preferably in a safe.
  22. Do not share your personal information with strangers while out and about in a foreign and unknown place.
  23. Look into single’s cruises. They often have designated and safe meetups for other single adults
  24. Don’t be cheap when it comes to your accommodations. Staying in a place with security or a gated entrance is a great option for solo travelers.

At different times in our lives, we all appreciate and need the opportunity to be alone. This desire does not change when it comes to traveling. There is peace and tranquility in exploring a new place with just oneself. So go for it!

Be confident! Be Safe! But most importantly, have a ball and truly enjoy yourself.  Let me know if you help planning your next adventure.
