If you want to satisfy your wanderlust, but don’t have the resources to spend too much time away from home, a day trip might be just the adventure for you. Discover new places and new faces not too far from home. You don’t need to worry about packing an overnight bag or looking for a hotel. Here’s what you need to know to make the most of your 24-hour getaway:

1. Plan Out Your Day

First, start by answering the question, where do you want to go?’ This question will help you figure out how much you’re looking to spend, how you want to spend your time, and what you should bring and wear? Ideally, it would help if you tried focusing on places no more than three hours away to maximize trip time. While planning, keep in mind many places offer discounts for locals.

2. Get Up Early

Don’t sleep your trip away! Get up with the sun, or at least early enough to beat traffic. Some places you visit on your trip might even have special deals if you arrive early, such as a flea market. Getting an early start is especially important in the winter when you may only get eight or so hours of daylight.

3. Think Like a Tourist

We get so used to living in our cities; we might not be able to come up with cool things to do.

Think like you’ve new in town; it will push you into taking roads and corners you’ve never taken before. Getting lost in streets you’ve never been to and seeing new and beautiful things you never realized were there can make you see your city in a new light.

4. Recruit friends

Day trips are an excellent opportunity to catch up with your friends.  Be sure to reach out to those friends who can never come on vacations because they are “too busy.” Most people have at least one free day. Use a group chat to communicate important info, sync your schedules, and get suggestions about how your group wants to spend their day. Be sure to note any dietary needs, like if your friend is a vegan, diabetic, or has food allergies. You should make them feel included by seeking inclusive dining options that fit their needs.

5. Prepare for anything

Regardless of your destination, there are several items you should always bring with you on your day trip. If you’re prepared with a well-supplied day pack, then you will be ready for any adventure or mishap that may come your way. Items you should have include:

You should also take time to make sure your car has been checked and you have options in case you need roadside assistance.

By planning and prepping ahead of time, you can avoid wasting time and making unnecessary purchases. It’s also important to remember to be flexible! The plan is in place to act as a guide, but ultimately this is your day of adventure. Spontaneity creates memories, so don’t be afraid of taking a detour. You might come across something unexpectedly fun!
